Executive Director of Island Nature Trust

Kate MacQuarrie is a passionate botanist and naturalist whose life is a testament to the profound connection between humans and the natural world. Born and raised in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Kate’s journey into the world of plants began early. Initially pursuing physics, she soon realized her true calling lay in biology, particularly botany—a love that has flourished for over three decades.
Beyond her academic achievements, Kate has dedicated her career to environmental stewardship. For 20 years, she served as the Director of Forests, Fish, and Wildlife with the PEI Government’s Department of Environment, Water, and Climate Change. Her commitment to education and conservation is further exemplified through her work with the Macphail Woods Ecological Forestry Project, where she offers workshops on native plants and ecological forestry.
In her personal life, Kate is an avid forager, trapper, and angler, skills she has honed over the years. She delights in creating meals from the wild foods she gathers, often adding a touch of bacon to enhance the flavors.
Through her platform, PEI Untamed, Kate shares her extensive knowledge, offering workshops and resources that encourage others to reconnect with nature. She believes that by fostering an interest in the natural world, individuals can build the confidence to explore and ultimately restore the vital bond between society and the environment.
Kate’s unwavering dedication to nature education and conservation has earned her recognition, including the Heritage Recognition Award from the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation. Her life and work inspire those around her to embrace the wonders of the natural world and to play an active role in its preservation.
