Executive Director of the Black Cultural Society of PEI

Tamara Steele is known for her significant contributions to community advocacy and leadership. As the Executive Director of the Black Cultural Society of Prince Edward Island, Tamara Steele has been instrumental in amplifying the voices and experiences of Black Islanders. Under her leadership, the BCSPEI has expanded its reach, offering programs and initiatives that promote education, cultural awareness, and social justice.
Stemming from her role in organizing and leading PEI’s Black Lives Matter March in 2020, Steele has played a key role in advocating for anti-racism policies across the province. Her efforts have led to greater awareness and action on issues affecting Black communities, including systemic racism in education, employment, and health care. Through public speaking, media appearances, and collaborations with other community organizations, Steele has become a leading voice for change in PEI.
In addition to her work with the BCSPEI, Steele is recognized for her contributions to the broader Canadian landscape. She has participated in national dialogues on racial equality and has been a supporter of local and regional initiatives that seek to build a more inclusive society.
In September 2020, Tamara was featured in Chatelaine Magazine’s list of “33 Black Canadians Making Change Now” and subsequently went on to receive the Fusion Charlottetown Community Organizer Award in 2021, a PEI Museum Heritage Award for upholding and promoting the rights, culture, heritage, and achievements of the Black community of PEI in 2022, as well as a Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2023.
